Job description
About the job
David Jones has been shaping the Australian retail experience for over 185 years, and the technology underpinning that experience matters as much as the product on the floor. As the POS & Food Systems Application Lead within the Platform team, you'll own the systems that connect every transaction — from fashion floors to food halls — and drive their continuous evolution.
What You'll Own
Lead the lifecycle of David Jones' Point of Sale and Food Systems applications, ensuring safe, reliable and resilient services across ~40 stores and Distribution centres.
Own application availability, transaction integrity, and health, acting as the key escalation point for critical incidents, problem management, and operational excellence
Support the simplification, technical debt reduction, and modernisation initiatives, including cloud-enabled architectures, API-first integrations, and unified commerce capabilities
Manage the flow of transaction data across POS, payments, data warehouses, and downstream enterprise systems, ensuring accuracy, observability, and trusted reporting
Establish and govern service levels, operational KPIs, and peak-trading readiness plans that support seamless store operations
Lead vendor and partner relationships across POS, payments, hardware, and food systems, ensuring strong performance, SLA compliance, commercial outcomes, and continuous improvement
Deliver enhancements, upgrades, releases, and proof-of-concept initiatives while balancing innovation, operational risk, and business priorities
Build and lead a high-performing application team, fostering a product mindset focused on customer outcomes, automation, efficiency, and continuous improvement
What You'll Bring
Demonstrated experience leading or supporting enterprise POS, retail store systems, or transaction-based platforms within a complex multi-site retail environment
Strong understanding of retail transaction flows, including POS, payments, reconciliation, inventory, and finance ecosystems
Experience managing critical application platforms end-to-end, including incident, problem, change, release, and lifecycle management
Proven ability to drive platform modernisation and simplification while maintaining operational stability in legacy environments
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across store operations, business leadership, technology teams, and external vendors
Experience managing vendor ecosystems and holding partners accountable for service delivery, commercial outcomes, and SLA performance
Understanding of integration patterns including APIs, messaging platforms, event-driven architectures, and batch processing
Familiarity with modern technology practices such as cloud services, observability, automation, AI-assisted operations, and platform engineering principles
Knowledge of PCI-DSS, payment security requirements, and retail compliance obligations
A commercial mindset with the ability to balance customer experience, operational risk, cost optimisation, and value realisation
Desirable Experience
Experience supporting food service, hospitality, or food retail technology platforms
Knowledge of Oracle Retail applications, messaging technologies (IBM MQ, JMS, Oracle AQ), or retail data integration ecosystems
Experience with scripting and automation technologies including SQL, Python, Shell, Java, or similar
Exposure to large-scale POS modernisation or unified commerce transformation programs
